The Gauteng MEC for Education and Youth Development, Mr. Panyaza Lesufi is greatly disheartened about the latest deaths of two learners, which increases the number of reported deaths to seven, within a week.
It is alleged that a 17-year-old Grade 12 girl learner from Oosrand Secondary School was on Saturday, 08 February 2020, assaulted by passengers in a taxi. She subsequently jumped from the moving taxi in Germiston and unfortunately died on the scene.
Today, 10 February 2020, the school community was informed of this unfortunate incident and the Principal together with the School Management Team (SMT) visited the bereaved family at Ramaphosa informal settlement, to convey sincere condolences and offer necessary support accordingly.
Circumstances surrounding this incident are investigated by the police.
On another sad note, an 8-year-old girl learner from Durban Deep Primary School was on Saturday, 08 February 2020, swept away by flash floods at Princess informal settlement in Roodepoort. Regrettably the said learner drowned.
“Indeed, we will not get tired to seek necessary divine Intervention, and we are hopeful that spiritual leaders will guide us accordingly. Sadly, these two deaths brings us to about 10 deaths reported since we opened schools for the 2020 academic year,” said MEC Lesufi.
The department has dispatched officials from the Psycho Social Unit to render counselling services to both schools and the bereaved families.
