Police officials from Koster managed to arrest a 27-year-old suspect on Monday, 18 June 2018, when he gave a lift to a very feisty young woman, who fought her way back to safety.
This follows on the reporting of three previous rapes of young women around hiking spots in Phokeng and Rustenburg.
Three rape cases were reported by women on their way to work in the early morning hours, using hiking spots around Phokeng and Rustenburg. The incidents were reported between 5 May 2018 and 18 June 2018.
The suspect would allegedly offer lifts to innocent women, standing at these hiking spots. According to information the suspect were driving a silver/grey Chevrolet Corsa Utility Van or a silver/grey Toyota Corolla.
The suspect would then drive with the women into the bushes and allegedly rape his victims at gun point. The victims would be robbed of small amounts of cash and their mobile phones. Their ages ranged between 22 and 39.
The suspect met his match on Monday morning, 18 June 2018, after offering a lift to a 27-year-old victim, who was travelling from a hiking spot to Mahikeng. Her sister, who accompanied her to the hiking spot, took down the registration number of the vehicle when she got into the vehicle with the suspect.
On the way to Mahikeng, the suspect indicated that he wanted to fill up the vehicle. He then turned onto a gravel road next to the Garage, but did not stop at the Garage as indicated. The victim became suspicious and started to wrestle with the suspect.
He grabbed her mobile phone and held her at gunpoint. While the vehicle was still in motion, she jumped from the vehicle and ran back to the Garage for assistance. Koster SAPS were summoned. The victim’s sister supplied the Police with the registration number of the suspect’s vehicle. Members managed to arrest the suspect in the vicinity of “Ratsegaai”.
A pellet gun was found in his possession. He appeared in the Tlhabane court on Wednesday, 20 June 2018, and the case was remanded in court until 20 July 2018 for a formal bail application.
The brave behaviour of the victim is applauded, fighting her way out of danger, as well as the intelligent decision made by her sister to obtain the registration
number of the vehicle transporting her sister.
Subsequently, a comprehensive look-out could be given and the vehicle of the suspect traced. The possibility is currently being investigated that the suspect might be linked to other rapes in the Rustenburg area.
Women who have fallen prey to incidents of rape in a similar manner, are requested to contact the investigating officer, Captain Mokgathle of FCS Rustenburg on mobile number 082 772 6453.
